Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis.Colossians 4:12-13
We don’t know much about this man Epaphras, but what we learn here is a great example for all of us.
1. He was a common man. He was possibly from Colossi as it says he is one of you. It is a great blessing how everywhere the gospel is preached, there are men who are called to be ministers. We must remember that for the gospel to continue it takes men who will surrender to the call of God to preach.
2. He was a serving man. The call of God is not to position but to service. Those who are seeking a position or authority are in the flesh and not in the Spirit. They will hurt others instead of helping them.
3. He was a praying man. He was known for his fervency in prayer. This was no second thought praying, his prayers were specific and consistent. The bulk of his prayer seemed to be for the spiritual maturity of others, that they would not only grow in Christ but also that they would walk in His will.
4. He was a zealous man. He had a burden for people. The burden he had was pretty specifically for those in Colossi, Laodicea and Hierapolis. God placed a call on some to specific locations and gives them a zeal or a burden for the people there. We should all be desirous that everyone get saved, but God also gives pastors and missionaries a burden for a particular people and their spiritual health.
This is a good man to emulate in his spirit and his actions.
